Unique effective action in Kaluza-Klein theories and spontaneous compactification
Description
Quantum gravity is considered on the background manifold M4 x S1, where M4 is Minkowski space and S1 is the 1-sphere (circle). The Vilkovyskii unique effective action is used for a calculation of the one-loop, gauge-independent, effective potential. The possibility of spontaneous compactification is investigated
