Construction of simulators based on volume elements from of tomographic colored images

Description
The voxel based anthropomorphic phantoms have been developing quickly representing, in a way more and more realistic, the details of the anatomical structures of the human body. In the planning of therapeutic applications, the results of calculations, using specific models to represent specific patients, must be obtained in a time interval that does not harm the treatment. The segmentation of organs and tissues is the critical step, considering the spent time in its accomplishment, to make possible the application of these models. A computer program that uses mathematical phantoms to evaluate photon transport was adapted to use voxel phantoms built, automatically, starting from tomographic colored images. Using this new approach, simple geometrical models considering regions with different densities (bone, soft tissue and lung) was built. The results of calculation of radiation transport using this program are in good agreement with those obtained by the MCNP program, which uses the same geometrical model defined by equations.
