QED and highly ionized many-electron atoms

Description

Field theoretic effects, defined as the difference between solving a Hamiltonian many-body problem and fully incorporating quantum field theory, are discussed in the context of the atomic many-body problem. It is shown that these effects are enhanced in highly ionized atoms, and can be studied unambiguously because wave function uncertainties can also be controlled to high accuracy. Comparisons with the nuclear problem are made
