Apparent magnitudes, redshifts, and inhomogeneities in the universe

Description

The apparent magnitude-redshift data of Sandage and Hardy have been analyzed using inhomogeneous zero-shear models of the universe and treating both the acceleration factor and the amount of intergalactic material as parameters to be determined by the data. The value found for the acceleration factor depends on the homogeneity factor and on the evolutionary correction assumed for the absolute magnitudes of galaxies, but may possibly be greater than 0.5, in which case the universe is ''closed.''
