Negative ion sources for atom beam injection heating of fusion plasmas

Description
The ITER tokamak will be equipped with 2 neutral atom beams of deuterium with a power of 17 MW and an energy of 1 MeV. These beams will stem from the acceleration of negative deuterium ions produced in big ion sources. The ITER negative ion source will be a plasma itself in which ions will be produced through the pounding of a metal (caesium) surface by atoms. There is no existing sources that respond to the specifications for ITER, and the design of such sources is the subject of research programs in France and in Europe
