Molecular stopping cross sections of alpha particles in butane, propane, ethane, neon, helium and hydrogen

Description

Molecular stopping cross sections of alpha particles in butane, propane, ethane and helium for the energy range 1–5 MeV and in neon and hydrogen in the range of 2–5 MeV are presented. The measurements were made by varying the source-to-detector distance within a chamber containing gas at atmospheric pressure. Measured values for each gas are fitted to a semi-empirical function with two parameters for application in computational models. Results agree satisfactorily with previous measurements on protons and alpha particles in neon, helium, hydrogen and ethane.
