Description
The key point to improve the integrative properties of toughened poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/elastomer blend is enhancing the phase interface compatibility between PET and elastomer. In this work, we utilize γ-ray simultaneous irradiation technique to induce the graft copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) onto PET resinand studied the influence of the radiation graft copolymer PET-g-PAA on the mechanical properties of PET/ ethylene-methyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate blends. The SEM images of the PET/ST-2000/PET-g-PAA blends show a better interfacial adhesion between the PET matrix and the elastomer, compared with that of pure PET/ST-2000 blends. At the same time, the impact strength of PET/ST-2000 has also been improved after PET-g-PAA is added. When PET-g-PAA is added in a range of 6-9 wt%, the integrative mechanical properties of the PET/ST-2000/PET-g-PAA blends can maintain at a better level. It indicated that the side poly (acrylic acid) chains on the backbone of the PET/PET-g-PAA can react with the elastomer, which makes the PET-g-PAA act as a compatiblizer of the PET and the elastomer and enhance the compatibility of the PET phase and the elastomer phase, and further improve the toughening effect of elastomer.
