Eu reduction with Jones reductor
Description
The starting solution of Sm, Eu, Gd chlorides was proportioned into a Jones reductor. Reduced Eu was separated either by precipitation in a sulfate medium or by extraction column chromatography. The former method is suitable only for enrichment to an Eu concentration of about 90% because partial oxidation of EuSO4 by atmospheric oxygen takes place. The latter method proved suitable for obtaining pure europium. Without the use of an inert atmosphere and without recycling, 99.7% purity of Eu was obtained with almost 98% reduction efficiency.
