Archaeochemical study of glass beads excavated from the sites in Hokkaido at Ainu culture period by using a portable XRF spectrometer

Description

Since the chemical composition of glass reflects raw materials and production site we have studied, the origin of the glass by using X-ray fluorescence analysis focusing on ancient and medieval glass beads. In Honshu of the Middle Ages, the circulation of glass had declined, but in Hokkaido of the same period a unique culture called the Ainu Culture Period was emerging, and the circulation of glass was thriving. We focused on glass beads excavated from sites in Hokkaido during Ainu culture period. The analytical results showed that these glass beads can be classified into two types-lead potash silicate glass (K2O-PbO-SiO2) and potash lime silicate glass (K2O-CaO-SiO2). Analysis of the earliest glass of the Ainu culture period also revealed that the glass type that circulated changes significantly when it comes to the Ainu culture period. In addition, we analyzed the glass beads of Hokkaido throughout, suggesting that there is a high possibility that potassium lime glass was probably made in China in terms of chemical composition, and we were able to clarify the compositional type of glass beads circulated in Hokkaido during the Ainu culture period. 古代ガラスの化学組成は原料や製作地を反映することから,著者らは古代・中世のガラスビーズに着目して蛍光X線分析を用いて,これまで起源推定を行ってきた.中世の本州では,ガラスの流通が衰退していたが,同時期の北海道ではアイヌ文化期と呼ばれる独自の文化が興っており,ガラスの流通が盛んであった.我々はそのアイヌ文化期の北海道の遺跡出土ガラスビーズに着目して研究を行った.分析の結果,カリ鉛ガラス(K2O-PbO-SiO2) とカリ石灰ガラス (K2O-CaO-SiO2)の2タイプが流通していることが明らかとなった.アイヌ 文化期の最初期のガラスを分析すると,アイヌ文化期になると流通したガラスタイプが大きく変化することも明らかとなった.さらに北海道全域のガラスを化学分析すると,カリ石灰ガラスは化学組成の面から中国で製作された可能性が高いことを示唆することができ,アイヌ文化期の北海道に流通したガラスビーズの概要を解明することができた.(著者)
