Radiation hormesis: evidence for radiation stimulation and speculation regarding mechanisms

Creators

  • 1. Electric Power Research Inst., Palo Alto, CA (USA)

Description

Ionizing radiation is generally believed to be harmful at all levels of exposure, yet, the scientific basis for this assumption is weak to non-existent. Indeed, there is a considerable body of evidence which suggests the contrary, namely, that low doses of radiation, under certain circumstances, may be beneficial. This literature is reviewed, together with some suggested mechanisms. (author)
