Studies were planned and performed for investigation of the leaching behaviour of radioactive cobalt, for the purpose of determining to what extent and at what rate radioactive material may leach from corrosion-damaged Co-60 radiation sources to the surrounding soil, which in this case was a simulated environment, and may lead to radioactive contamination of groundwater, creating a health risk for population groups. The leaching of cobalt from cobalt containing metal was investigated in order to derive empirical knowledge about the gross leaching behaviour of Co-60 radiation sources used in water well irradiation devices or in other, water-bearing irradiation equipment. Both radioactive experiments using real Co-60 sources as well as inactive experiments with non-radioactive cobalt source materials were carried out. (orig./CB)

Es wurden Untersuchungen zum Auslaugverhalten von radioaktivem Kobalt geplant und durchgefuehrt. Es bestand das Ziel zu klaeren, in welchem Masse und mit welcher Geschwindigkeit aus korrosionsgeschaedigten Co-60 Strahlenquellen unter simulierten Erdreichbedingungen das radioaktive Material herausgeloest wird, woraus moeglicherweise eine Kontamination des Grundwassers und damit eine Gefaehrdung von Gruppen der Bevoelkerung abzuleiten ist. Die Auslaugung von Kobalt aus Kobaltmetall wurde mit dem Ziel untersucht, auf empirischem Wege Erkenntnisse ueber das Brutto-Auslaugverhalten von Co-60 Strahlenquellen zu gewinnen, die sich in Brunnenbestrahlungsanlagen oder in anderen, wasserfuehrenden Bestrahlungsanlagen im Einsatz befinden. Dazu wurden sowohl aktive Versuche mit realen Co-60 Strahlenquellen als auch inaktive Versuche mit Ausgangsmaterialien aus nicht-radioaktivem Kobalt fuer die Herstellung von Strahlenquellen durchgefuehrt.
