Novel mechanism of plasma heating using laser-driven whistler waves
Description
Whistler waves, electromagnetic waves propagating along magnetic field lines, possess the characteristic of not having a critical density. By irradiating a high-intensity laser along the magnetic field, it may be possible to experimentally generate laser-driven, large-amplitude Whistler waves in the laboratory, introducing a new energy transport mechanism significantly different from traditional laser-plasma interactions. In this chapter, we focus on how the energy conversion from laser to plasma is altered by the influence of a strong magnetic field, based on results from plasma particle simulations. The mechanism of plasma acceleration and heating through Whistler waves holds the potential for applications in the novel design of laser fusion and contributes to understanding the interaction of magnetic fields and radiation fields in astrophysical phenomena. 磁力線方向に伝播する電磁波であるホイッスラー波は臨界密度を持たないという特徴がある.高強度レーザーを磁場に沿って照射することで,レーザー駆動の大振幅ホイッスラー波を実験室で生成することができれば,従来のレーザー・プラズマ相互作用とは大きく異なる新しいエネルギー輸送機構を実現できるかもしれない.この章では,強磁場の影響によってレーザーからプラズマへのエネルギー変換にどのように変化がもたらされるのかを,プラズマ粒子シミュレーションの結果を中心に紹介する.ホイッスラー波を介したプラズマ加速・加熱機構は,レーザー核融合の新しいデザインへの応用や,天体現象における磁場・輻射場の相互作用の解明に繋がることが期待できる.(著者)Additional details
