Preparation and properties of ceramic nuclear fuel elements

  • 1. Materials and Energy Research Centre (Iran)

Description

The use of ceramic fuel elements has increasing applications in nuclear reactors. This is mainly due to high temperature properties of some ceramics which enable them to be used in more crucial conditions encountered in modern nuclear reactors. In this paper, ceramic nuclear fuel elements will be compared with conventional metallic fuels and some important features of these compounds will be discussed. Among ceramic fuels, UO2, because of its present technological importance, is taken as an example in order to discuss parameters affecting the properties of the end product. Main properties to be studied include the characteristics of the primary powder and subsequent shape forming and sintering procedure. The role of additives for improving certain properties of these fuel elements is also investigated
