Development of superconducting solenoids for MEHIPA

  • 1. Ion Accelerator Development Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

The second stage of the Indian ADS programme envisages building a high current, 200 MeV superconducting proton accelerator: the Medium Energy High Intensity Proton Accelerator (MEHIPA). The MEHIPA Reference Design Report (RDR) studies a 10 mA, 200 MeV linac, consisting of a 3 MeV normal conducting RFQ followed by three families of superconducting Single Spoke Resonators (SSR), SSR-A, SSR-B and SSR-C, to accelerate the beam to 200 MeV. Superconducting solenoid magnets will be used for focusing the beam between the SSR cavities These solenoids will be installed between superconducting cavities in the cryomodule. So the main design criterion for these solenoids is to have sharply falling fringing fields at the surface of the adjacent superconducting cavities. Superconducting bucking coils are used to achieve this in the solenoid. Detailed electromagnetic design of the superconducting solenoids is presented in this paper. (author)
