Preliminary field test results of diamond-enhanced inserts for three-cone rock bits
Description
Increased penetration rate accompanied with longer life have always been primary objectives of both rock bit manufacturers and drilling contractors. Tungsten carbide inserts have been used in rock bits for over 30 years and are a mature technology. Synthetic diamond insert technology may prove to be the next step in three-cone rock bit performance. This paper reviews the design and laboratory testing of diamond enhanced gage inserts with an emphasis on field performance. The impact of this technology on bit life, penetration rate, and drilling costs will also be discussed
