Description
Results from a study including a partial wave analysis of the low-mass pπ+π- system produced in pp→p(pπ+π-) at 12 and 24 GeV/c are reported. The pπ+π- mass-spectrum starts with a sharp rise, similar to that observed for the 3π and Kππ systems in the reactions πp→p(πππ) and Kp→p(Kππ) respectively. The threshold and peak positions occur at the same values as in the meson cases, if the square of the three-particle mass minus the square of the beam particle mass is used as variable. This first enhancement in the pπ+π- mas distribution is dominated by spin parity Jsup(P) = 3/2- decaying into an S-wave Δπ system; no indication for resonance production could be found. (orig./BJ)
