A constant chromomagnetic field leads nowhere

Description
The computation of the effective action for calssically unstable field configurations such as a constant chromomagnetic field is shown to be a completely non-perturbative problem. We show in particular that such configurations do not dominate the functional integral in the semiclassical approximation. Ultraviolet properties of the effective action are examined in detail. We do not find any anomalous scaling behaviour in contrast to a claim that has recently appeared in the literature. (orig.)
