A vehicle with bodycounter for contaminated areas

A van of the type 709D-Ka (Daimler-Benz) has been converted to a whole body counting vehicle with the newly developed 'KFA-3' counter, whose shielding consists of 50 mm thick lead bricks with a total weight of 1.5 tons. To detect γ-rays in the energy range of 0.1-2 MeV two large NaJ(Tl)-detectors are inserted. Subjects will be measured in a lying position detectors being positioned behind their back. The calibration has been carried out with a brick phantom. The correction factors for the weight dependance of the measurement results could also be determined. The detection limit for body burden of 137Cs is in the order of several hundred Bequerels. It is a function of background activity, measuring time and bodyweight. The van can further be equipped with instrumention necessary for environmental monitoring. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Im Forschungszentrum Juelich wurde ein vorhandener Kastenwagen des Typs 709D-KA (Daimler-Benz) als Inkorporationsmessfahrzeug mit dem neuentwickeltem Ganzkoerperzaehler 'KFA-3' ausgestattet. Die Konstruktion basiert auf einer vorhandenen Abschirmung von 50 mm dicken Bleiziegeln in Form einer Liege mit einem Gesamtgesicht von 1,5 Tonnen. Zum Nachweis der γ-Strahlung im Energiebereich von 0,1-2 MeV werden zwei grosse NaJ(Tl)-Detektoren eingesetzt. Die Messung der Personen erfolgt in liegender Position, wobei sich die Detektoren im Ruecken des Probanden befinden. Die Kalibrierung erfolgte mit einem Blockziegelphantom, mit dem auch Korrekturfaktoren fuer die Gewichtsabhaengigkeit der Messgeometrie ermittelt werden konnten. Abhaengig von der Messzeit, dem Strahlungsuntergrund und dem Koerpergewicht des Probanden liegt die Nachweisgrenze fuer den Koerpergehalt an 137Cs bei einigen hundert Bequerel. Das Messfahrzeug kann mit zusaetzlicher Messtechnik fuer Umweltmessungen ausgestattet werden. (orig.)Additional details
