Do mammalian cells have a recombination repair system
Description
Survival of mammalian cells with and without postirradiation treatment with caffeine and effect of UV radiation on recombination process are studied. Results indicate possibility of a repair mechanism which operates more efficiently in tetraploid than diploid cells. The mechanism is, however, found to be inhibited by caffeine. Results also indicate exchanges of DNA between chromatids of chromosomes being enhanced by UV radiation. Relationship of such exchanges or recombinations with DNA repair remains to be established Chinese hamster cells labelled with 3H and 14C thymidine were used in the studies. (M.G.B.)
