Description
The article described the experience of the Hong Kong Observatory on the participation in IRPA-1O. During the conference, the Hong Kong Observatory describes its work on radiation monitoring, including an investigation on the natural terrestrial radiation exposure in Hong Kong-a survey on environmental gamma absorbed dose rate in air, an overview of emergency monitoring in Hong Kong and the development of an aerial monitoring system in Hong Kong. By analyzing information from various sources, the spatial variation of the environmental radiation level in Hong Kong is obtained. In response to the operation of the Cuangdong Nuclear Power Station at Daya Bay, an Emergency Radiation Monitoring Programme has been implemented. In the early phase of a nuclear accident, the objective of the Programme is to rapidly detect the presence of radioactive materials in the territories. In the intermediate and late phases, major effort will be put on monitoring of foodstuffs and drinking water. The aerial monitoring system of the Hong Kong Observatory can be used to rapidly track any radioactive plume over Hong Kong, or identify contaminated ground surfaces and locate hot spots. (authors)
