Characterization of polymer stabilized silver nanoparticles modified Glassy Carbon electrodes for electroanalytical applications

Highlights: • Silver nanoparticles modified Glassy Carbon electrodes are prepared with a very simple procedure. • Deposition onto the Glassy Carbon support of a suspension of Ag-NP in Nafion®. • Characterization by CV, EIS, SEM and EDS. • Modified electrodes show promising electroanalytical performances. • Preliminary applications for the detection of model halides are presented. -- Abstract: Nafion® stabilized silver nanoparticles modified Glassy Carbon electrodes were prepared with a very simple procedure depositing onto the Glassy Carbon support a suspension of nanomaterials in Nafion®. Electrodes were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Stability in air and in solution and repeatability were evaluated. The modified electrodes show promising electroanalytical performances due to the increase of the effective surface area, to a formation of a random array of nanoparticles on the Nafion® three-dimensional substrate with intermediate diffusional behaviour between planar and convergent, and to a very small double layer capacitance. Applications exploiting the electrocatalytic properties of Ag for the detection of two chlorinated compounds (dichloromethane and halothane) are presented
