Evaluation of a portable HPGe detector in field conditions for measurements of terrestrial radioactivity over large areas

Description
A portable p-type HPGe detector (20% relative efficiency) has been evaluated for rapid measurements of terrestrial radioactivity by in-situ gamma ray spectrometry. Calibration factors to convert the measured full absorption peak count rate to activity in the soil have been evaluated. In this paper the methodology to find out the concentration of terrestrial radionuclides using in-situ gamma spectrometry has been discussed. Comparison of the results obtained by soil sampling followed by laboratory measurements and in-situ measurements has also been carried out. (author)
