Two forms of the AsO32- radical in γ-irradiated heidingerite CaHAsO4 . H2O
Description
One of the phases of the system CaO-H3AsO4-H3PO4-H2O, obtained in the pH range 2-4 at 250C, is heidingerite CaHAsO4.H2O, which is found in nature as a mineral. The structure of heidingerite is made up of doubled layers of AsO4 tetrahedra within which are situated the Ca atoms, surrounded by seven oxygen atoms (distorted pentagonal bipyramid). Six of them are joined to As atoms, and the seventh oxygen belongs to the water molecule. The formation of two types of AsO32- in heidingerite can be attributed to the two possibilities of structural breakdown, arising on irradiation of heidingerite
