Description

Analysis of the thyroid cancer incidence in population of the Belgorod Region after the Chernobyl accident (1986-2000) has been performed. During this period 795 new thyroid cancer cases, including 63 cases in children and adolescents, had been registered. The highest level of incidence rate reached 10.5 cases per 100000 in 1996. Dynamics and level of incidence appeared to be similar to those as in highly contaminated Bryansk, Orel and Tula Regions of Russia. It is supposed that an increase of thyroid cancer incidence in the Belgorod Region was induced by 'unaccounted' iodine radionuclides in April-June 1986
