Proportional and drift chambers in applied investigations

The application of multiwire proportional cnambers in X-ray and neutron radiography, nuclear medicine for single gamma rays and positron annihilation detection, X-ray crystallography, and X-ray astronomy is discussed. Basic design features specific for every application are noted. The difference results from whether the ionizing event occurs in the chamber gas or in some solid converter. The readout section of the chamber is fairly similar. It is shown that multiwire proportional chambers with appropriate shaped drift spaces are excellent detectors for imaging X-ray, gamma ray and neutron distributions
