Plans for BASF nuclear power plant dismissed

New profitability calculations for the planned BASF nuclear power plant with an electrical power of 780 megawatt have shown that it is not worthwile to build the power plant at the location north of the purification plant as was planned in spring 1976. The additional costs caused by the location amount to 300 million DM. These costs also include the indemnification claims by the Saarferngas AG who had planned a natural gas storage at the same place. The total price of the nuclear power plant would thus be 2,5 billion DM. The demanded burst protection (near to a big city) which would probably have influenced the safety of the nuclear power plants now being constructed would also have to be added (state of science and engineering). Neue Wirtschaftlichkeitsberechnungen fuer das geplante BASF-Kernkraftwerk mit 780 Megawatt elektrischer Leistung haben ergeben, dass sich ein Bau an dem im Fruehjahr 1976 in die Planung einbezogenen Standort noerdlich der Klaeranlage nicht lohnt. Allein die standortbezogenen Mehrkosten, wozu unter anderem Schadenersatzansprueche der Saarferngas AG, die an gleicher Stelle einen Erdgasspeicher geplant hatte, gehoeren, belaufen sich auf rund 300 Millionen DM. Die Gesamtkosten fuer das Kernkraftwerk wuerden damit auf 2,1 Milliarden DM steigen; zusaetzlich kaeme noch die geforderte Berstsicherung (Grosstadtnaehe), die wahrscheinlich Auswirkungen auf den Sicherheitsstandard der z.
