Suitability of steels as ESS mercury target container materials

Description

A liquid mercury (Hg) target concept has been selected as the first priority development target for the European Spallation Source (ESS). The stability of the Hg target container is one of the most important issues, as under high intensity 1.35 GeV proton irradiation the beam window will be subject to very intensive radiation damage and high thermomechanical loads. In the present report, the material selection for the container will be considered, discussing mostly the data-base accumulated by the fusion program. Two candidate materials, solution annealed 316 type austenitic stainless steel (SA 316) and Sandvik HT-9 martensitic steel, are of primary interest. (author) 9 figs., 2 tabs., 100 refs
