Retention factor estimate of the bolichera net, used in fishery Cienaga Grande de Santa, Colombian Caribbean

Description

In order to estimate the catch ability of the Boliche, one of the six fishing methods existing in the Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta, its retention factor, in terms of weight and number of individuals was calculated. A total of 70 hauls were made in different place s of the ecosystem; in each haul a prototype boliche commonly employed commercially was surrounded by an experimental boliche and its encircled area covered by castnet hauls. Results indicated that the macabi (Elops saurus), was the most retained species, while the Lisa (Mugil incilis) was the less retained. The catch of the boliche not depends on the available biomass enclosed by the net and rather it seems to be related with factors like the effectiveness in the maneuver of fishing and the behavior of the fishes at the encounter with the net it is advisable to apply a retention factor of 0.47 and 0.24 on weight and number respectively, to estimate the boliche catch ability
