The corrosion of 316 steel by lithium-lead alloys under nitrogen
Description
Both liquid and solid Li-Pb alloys are potential tritium breeders for fusion reactors and may become corrosive towards structural materials when N2 impurity is present. Although Li reacts readily with N2 to form and dissolve the very corrosive Li3N, pure Pb is inert towards N2 and forms no corrosive nitride. This study aims to determine the composition range over which Li-Pb alloys become corrosive towards 316 steel under N2, and is an extension and revision of our preliminary report [1] in which the true equilibrium had not been attained.
