Nature of broken SU(4) x SU(4) symmetry

Description

If there is an additional conserved quantum number, the charm, then the relative parity between the charmed and uncharmed states is not measurable. This leads to a symmetry operator W, which turns out to be a finite rotation in SU(4) × SU(4). The existence of W restrains the pattern of symmetry breaking. Among a number of possibilities, the most plausible is one in which SU(4) × SU(4) is first broken spontaneously down to SU(3) × SU(3) × U(1). The latter is then broken both explicitly and spontaneously to U(2) × U(1).
