The phase diagram of the neodymium-palladium system

Description

The phase diagram of the Nd-Pd binary system has been determined using a variety of experimental techniques; metallography, X-ray powder diffraction analysis, electron probe microanalysis and high temperature dilatometry. Four intermetallic phases have been found; NdPd3 and NdPd which melt congruently, and NdPd5 and Nd3Pd which melt peritectically. The alloying behaviour of neodymium with palladium is compared with other platinum-metal-rare-earth systems. The factors affecting the formation of the intermetallic phases are also discussed.
