Experimental and integrated studies of the effect of the properties of explosives and the mechanical characteristics of soils and rocks on crater size

Description

Relations have been established between the dimensions of craters produced by explosions in soils and the properties of the soils and explosives. The properties of chemical explosives, shock wave transmission in soils and the properties of the soils themselves (mainly those properties associated with high strain rates) were investigated. The results of a series of experiments with gelatin dynamite charges in a sand whose properties had been carefully measured, are reported. Results obtained from the literature concerning various sized charges (a few grams up to several tons of TNT) are grouped using dimensional analysis. Correlations established using these experimental results are presented in the form of nomograms; these allow the crater dimensions to be calculated when the medium and the explosive are known. Several applications to specific cases are presented. (author)

Abstract (French)

Des relations entre les dimensions des crateres d'explosion dans les sols d'une part, et les proprietes des sols et des explosifs d'autre part ont ete etablies. Les proprietes des explosifs chimiques, les lois de transmission de l'onde de choc au sol et quelques proprietes des sols, en particulier lors de deformations rapides, ont ete examinees. Les resultats d'une serie de tirs de petites charges de dynamite-gomme, dans un sable dont on avait soigneusement mesure les caracteristiques, sont rapportes. Les resultats experimentaux, trouves dans la litterature, de tirs de toutes tailles (de quelques grammes a quelques tonnes de TNT) sont regroupes a l'aide de l'analyse dimensionnelle. Les correlations etablies a partir de ces resultats experimentaux sont presentees sous forme d'abaques permettant le calcul des dimensions d'un cratere connaissant le milieu de l'explosif. Plusieurs applications a des cas concrets, des resultats obtenus, sont presentees. (auteur)
