Description
The radiation crosslinking of low density polyethylene (LDPE) in the presence of dicumyl peroxide has been (DCP) investigated. The gel content and the tensile stress at break are found to increase with the concentration of DCP. Comparison is made with the case of peroxide curing at high temperature. A sensitizing effect of the presence of DCP is established in the case of radiation crosslinking. Oxidative degradation must also be taken into account in the description of the process mechanism because there is a marked dose rate influence on the gel content and the tensile stress at break at a concentration of 2.5% DCP.
