40Ar-39Ar age determination of rocks by means of neutron irradiation

  • 1. Tokyo Univ. (Japan). Faculty of Science

Description

Fast-neutron irradiation was made in the Japanese Material Testing Reactor (JMTR) to determine the age of several rocks by measuring a ratio of 40Ar to 39Ar produced from the reaction of 39K(n,p) 39Ar. The specimens of the following rocks were examined; volcanic rocks in the vicinity of the northern Chile in South America, meteorites in the Antarctica, rocks in Shimanto district in Kochi Prefecture, rocks in the vicinity of Mineoka in Boso Peninsula and rocks in the vicinity of Kofu city. These specimens were irradiated together with the standard specimens, and after the cooling for 2 or 3 months, the Ar analyses were carried out to estimate the age of the rocks. The estimated values of the age of all the rocks are discussed in comparison with the other reported data. (Asami, T.)
