Description
An experimental device is set up in which an irradiated Pb target of 1-2 g/cm2 may be molten by heating in a vacuum. It can realize the release and collection of volatile product elements such as Hg, At, Ti and Po from the molten Pb target quickly and efficiently under appropriate condition. By filling in a little quantity of He gas and controlling the temperature of the transfer tube a satisfactory chemical selectivity for some interesting elements is obtained. The results demonstrate that this technique of molten target may be used in the target unit of an on-line isotope separator for increasing the yields of thick targets in the synthesis of some new isotopes with intermediate energy heavy ion beams
