Far infrared Cherenkov free electron laser
Description
The design parameters for a tunable 100 to 1000 μm Cherenkov free electron laser are discussed. The device consists of two parallel metallic plates, one of which is lined with dielectric film of between 25 to 100 μm thickness, driven by a 400 to 600 kV, 10 A, several microsecond long electron beam. Metal mesh filters complete the oscillator cavity. The basic operating characteristics of Cherenkov free electron lasers which lead to the above parameter choices are discussed. (orig.)
