Description

The possibility of burnup of the curium fraction from minor actinides as the main component of nuclear fuel is analyzed. The comparison of neutron multiplying properties for Cm2O3 fuel and traditional UOX fuel is made. The results of numerical simulation of Cm2O3 fuel burnup in different neutron spectra are considered. The calculations are made for the WWER reactor cell and the HTGR reactor cell with microfuel elements. Peculiarities of the Cm2O3 fuel handling connected with high-intensity heat release and helium accumulation as a result of α decay are discussed. The conclusion is made that the system consisting of curium isotope mixture may be made critical and its multiplying properties will be better as compared with compositions with uranium oxide fuel
