Pyrocarbon-coated fuel particles for fuel elements of HTR reactors

Description

The invention deals with fuel particles for HTR fuel elements with a core of heavy metal carbides or oxides, which are coated with layers of pyrolytic carbon. The pyrolytic carbon coating consists of a number of alternating porous and ligh-density layers. This arrangement will retain fission gases as well as solid fission products and heavy metals. According to the invention, the innermost high-density layer is isotropic and the other high-density layers, which are 20-50 μm thick, are anisotropic and retain the solid fission products. (UWI)

Abstract (German)

Die Erfindung betrifft Brennstoffpartikel fuer Brennelemente fuer Hochtemperaturreaktoren, deren Kern aus Schwermetallkarbiden oder -oxiden besteht und die von Pyrokohlenstoffschichten umgeben sind. Die Pyrokohlstoffhuelle besteht aus einer Reihe von Schichten, die abwechselnd poroes und hochdicht sind, dies soll bewirken, dass sowohl Spaltgase als auch feste Spaltprodukte und Schwermetalle zurueckgehalten werden. Erfindungsgemaess ist die inerte hochdichte Schicht isotrop und die weiteren etwa 20 bis 50 μm dicken hochdichten Teilschichten sind anisotrop, sie halten die festen Spaltprodukte zurueck. (UWI)
