RF heating of low pressure gases
Description
The plasma discharges surrounding a shielded solenoidal coil excited with current at 4 MHz have been investigated for helium, neon, nitrogen, argon, krypton and xenon in the pressure range 0.02 to 0.50 Torr. Measurements were made of various electrical properties including the operating power and the resistance and inductance reflected into the drive circuit by the discharges. Power levels up to 4000 watts were used. The value of reflected resistance behaves in a manner inconsistent with the observed changes in inductance when correlated through theory. The values of resistance exhibit only a slight dependence on pressure and current
