Oxidation kinetics of Ba/sub 2/YCu/sub 3/O/sub chi/

  • 1. AT and T Bell Labs., Murray Hill, NJ (USA)

Description

The kinetics of the oxidation of dense and porous samples of Ba/sub 2/YCu/sub 3/O/sub x/ ceramic have been determined by gravimetric analysis at 400 to 7000C. At 6000C and above the oxidized layer is protective and the rate of oxidation decreases as the layer thickness increases. At 5000C and below the oxidized layer is cracked and the rate is nearly linear. The fractures in the oxidized layer are caused by a 1% volume decrease which accompanies the increase of x from 6.37 to 6.92. Data are presented to show that the lattice changes caused both by the increase in oxygen content and by the thermal expansion are strongly anisotropic
