Characterization of TiB/Ti-Al-Nb composites produced by combustion synthesis

  • 1. McMaster Univ., Hamilton, Ontario (Canada). Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering

Description

Ti-24Al-11Nb-TiB (TiB2) composites have been produced by the self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) technique. The reaction wave was found to propagate in a steady-state manner when preheated and ignited at 853 K. A two phase structure of Ti3Al and Nb was formed for the Ti-24Al-11Nb sample, whereas with the addition of boron, Ti3Al and TiB phases containing dissolved Nb were formed. The morphology of the TiB phase varied from flake to whisker depending on amount of boron and the TiB whiskers had a tendency of aligning parallel to the direction of wave propagation. In cases where the reaction was highly exothermic (more boron in reactants) or when the sample was produced by the thermal explosion mode, the TiB2 phase was formed. Both hardness and compression strength of the composites were substantially increased by the presence of titanium borides
