C60-induced oxidative damage to crucial biomolecules and its potential uses in therapy

Description
The potential of fullerenes, as exemplified by C60, to induce damage to the crucial biomolecules DNA, proteins and lipids was examined using different model systems. On photosensitization, C60 induced significant damage to these biomolecules. If this can be selectively induced in diseased tissues like cancer, it may lead to its cure as in the case of photodynamic therapy. (author). 4 refs
