Active control of the FRC plasma. Studies relevant to steady operation

  • 1. Plasma Physics Laboratory, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University, Osaka (Japan)

Description

Plasma with Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) has attractive features for a fusion reactor. It has high beta value of about 1, which signifies that advanced fuel of D-3He can be used with a confining field that is almost equal to D-T Tokamaks, and it is also confined in a simple linear, open machine. Previously the FRC was believed to operate in pulse mode. But recently, with the technology of the translation, accessibility of the FRC to additional heating facilities has been improved, and studies relevant to steady operation, neutral beam injection, rotating magnetic field current drive and wave heating experiments, etc., are beginning to be carried out.
