Reliability criteria for radiological dating methods

Description

To study the reliability of the system radioactive isotope-radiogenic isotope. (40K-40Ar, 87Rb-87Sr, 238U-206Pb and others) used for age estimation in geology results of dating of about 10000 samples and minerals from different regions of the USSR and other countries. Possible causes of radiologic dating distortion are considered. Special attention is payed to the problem of K-Ar dating reliability. Analyzed are the existing representations of radiogenic isotope migration in minerals. A hypothesis on radiogenic argon migration mechanism, suggested by the authors, is based on diffusional translocation of ''complexes'', formed by the argon atom and crystal lattice defect of vacancy type. The recommendations are given to improve the efficiency and practical significance of geochronological studies. The whole complex of reliability evaluation is used for dating of formations of such complex polymetamorphic region as south-western Pamirs. Presented is a brief characteristic of analytical methods of K-Ar, Rb-Sr and U-Pb dating, as well as the results of radiologic dating determination, obtained by the authors in the process of investigation
