Investigation and simulation of radiation damage in metals by charged particle beams
Description
For investigation of nature of interaction processes between fastly moving charged particles and solids as well as mechanisms of radiation damage during irradiation the charged particle accelerators are widely used. During irradiation with charged particle beams one could reproduce and examine under well-controlled conditions practically all the known radiation effects and investigate physical nature of these effects in more detail. The characteristics of accelerators and plasma machines for investigation and simulation of radiation effects used in the USSR are given. The results of simulation and reactor experiments on different materials are analyzed. Most representative results concerning fission and fusion reactor structural materials behaviour may be obtained in real conditions of exploitation of the relevant reactors. Specific radiation effects in fusion reactor materials were discovered and investigated in simulation environment. The basic correlation factors for irradiation with different kinds of particles for the purpose of reproducing and obtaining similar results in changing microstructure and properties of materials, are discussed. Simulation experiments together with results of reactor investigation much contribute to radiation physics phenomena, radiation and ion-beam technologies as well as solving problems of creation low-activated materials with good radiation resistance
