String unification in Z3xZ3 orbifold models

Description

A discussion is given in the context of Z3xZ3 orbifold models of the circumstances in which it might be possible for unification of gauge coupling constants to occur at a unification scale as low as 1016 GeV. A detailed study is carried out for a semi-realistic Z3xZ3 orbifold model. (orig.)
