Extraction of microgram amounts of Eu and Yb from mixtures of lanthanides and actinides in aqueous ethanol

Description
A method for extracting microgram amounts of Eu and Yb from a mixture of lanthanides and actinides by reducing them to the divalent state and coprecipitating them with [Sr(18-crown-6)](BPh4)2 from aqueous ethanol is presented. It is demonstrated that a single precipitation of the Sr complex in the presence of Sn2+ incorporates 98-99% of the Eu2+ and Yb2+ whereas trivalent f-elements are carried less than 2%
