DITE status and upgrade proposals

Description

DITE (Divertor Injection Tokamak Experiment) was commissioned in 1976. The aim of the experiment was to study high power Neutral Injection and Divertor operation in a tokamak configuration. Since that time, stable, well controlled plasmas have been achieved with Ig = 280 kA, t = 500 mS and q min = 2. The Divertor has been shown to reduce and control impurities. Since the original commissioning, the Neutral Injection system has been upgraded from a neutral beam power of 250 kW (Phase 1) to the present 1.2 MW (Phase II) and the design of the MK I Divertor system has been improved. The paper reviews the present status of the engineering aspects of DITE. At the end of 1980, DITE will be shut down for a major upgrading in operational characteristics. This shut down will involve a complete rebuild of the load assembly giving flexibility for either co-or counter-Neutral Injection. The Neutral Injection capability will be doubled to 2.4 MW with the addition of two further lines (Phase IIA) and the power supplies will be extended to increase the pulse length of all four lines to 125 mS for 2.4 MW injected power (Phase IIB). In addition the MK II Bundle Divertor will be added to the load assembly. The details of the DITE upgrade are described. (author)
