Operation and maintenance experience with batch type sintering furnace for MOX fuel fabrication

  • 1. Advanced Fuel Fabrication Facility, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Tarapur (India)

Description

In Advanced Fuel Fabrication Facility (AFFF), BARC, Tarapur, batch type resistance heating sintering furnace is being used for MOX fuel fabrication. Due to radiological safety reasons furnace has been installed inside the glove box. During its operation and maintenance over a period of time various constraints were felt and subsequently attempts were made to overcome these problems. This paper describes modifications which have been carried out to make it more amenable for operation and maintenance viz, modifications in heating element and its electrical connection, insulation roof assembly, motorised door swing using synchronous motor. Additional safety features have been incorporated for fail safe operation of the furnace. (author)
