Superconducting cyclotron complex

Creators

Description

A design of a complex of related superconducting cyclotrons for 500 and 800 MeV for heavy-ion acceleration has been worked out. Three dees are used in each of the cyclotrons. They both operate in the same tuning range (27-84 MHz), and their accelerating systems are excited by a single generator. The ratio between the orbits of the two cyclotrons presupposes triple amplification of the rotation frequency on transition from the 500 MeV cyclotron to the 800 MeV one. It is proposed to use Philips ion sources mounted on automatically extractable devices. Using the two cyclotrons it is possible to produce beams of energies from 20 MeV/nucleon for uranium ions to 200 MeV/nucleon for lighter-than-calcium ions
